A fantastic race day

The 29th Reykjavik Marathon took place today. The weather was ideal for running, the runners were happy and the day was a total success.

Arnar Petursson won the marathon for the second year in a row when he crossed the finish line after 2:41:06. Mary Brown was the female marathon winner and her time was 3:04:03.

The fastest half marathon runner was Þorbergur Ingi Jónsson. His time was 1:09:23. The fastest woman to finish the half marathon was Martha Ernstsdóttir with the time 1:11:40. Martha holds the track record in half marathon for females, that is 1:11:40 from the year 2005. 

Björn Margeirsson was the male winner in the 10 km run, his time being 32:48. Fríða Rún Þórðardóttir was the female winner in the 10 km run, her time being 38:40.

The team Sveittir og Þreyttir (english Sweaty and Tired) won the relay race. Their time was 2:42:42.

This year a participation record was set. 13.410 runners were registered but last year registered runners were 12.481 and that was a record. Never have there been more participants registered for the marathon, the half marathon, the 10 km run or the relay race. In the year 2011 a participation record was set in all those distances. This year there were 806 registered marathon runners, but the previous record was 684 runners. 2.004 runners were registered for the half marathon and 5.177 were registered for the 10 km. These previous participation records were 1.852 registered for the half marathon and 4.431 registered for the 10 km. This year 31 team was registered for the relay race but in 2011 there were 33 of them. This year the teams included 118 runners but last year the runners were 116. Today 1.928 runners were registered for the 3 km fun run and 3.377 were registered for the children's Lazy Town run. Around 1.600 international runners participated but participants today were of 61 different nationalities. This is a new record.
