The race is open to both men and women of 18 years and up. Competitors must be in a very good physical shape to take part in this Ultra Marathon which under no circumstances is suitable for beginners. For those who are taking part in this marathon for the first time we recommend ultra marathon training on trails and hills and the steeper the better! The route has demanding hills that most runners walk up so it is also necessary to practice aggressive walking.

 Race Rules

1. All runners must confirm their presence at the startpoint in Landmannalaugar to  a race official. A runner who does not confirm his presence will be deleted from the list of competitors.
2. To ensure that everybody is accounted for, runners must check in again at the second water station at Álftavatn close to the middle of the race.
A runner who does not confirm his presence in Álftavatn is assumed lost and a rescue team will be notified.
3. All runners must have their race number visible at all times during the run to make it clear to race officials who is taking part in the race.
4. All runners must follow instructions about clothing.
5. Any runner reaching Álftavatn after 4 hours or Emstrur more than 6 hours after the start, will be disqualified.
6. Any runner who is unable to finish the race must personally inform the aid station captain of his decision and turn in his race number. Runners who leave the course without turning in their race number are classified as “lost”. Please do not allow that to happen.
7. Unofficial runners (without race number) will not be allowed to take part.
8. All runners must carry a waist bag for litter, delivered with the race number.

Teams

You can form a team of three, independent of sex or age, and the combined time of all three will count as the teams result.

Responsibility

Because the weather conditions in Iceland can be tough the Race organizer reserves the right to cancel or delay the race due to change in weather. This will only apply if the race director cannot secure the safety of runners on the course because of weather conditions.  Each runner makes his own decision as to whether he/she takes part or not based on  the information given.

Average temperature in July at “Laugavegur” is about 7-8°C or 45-47°F. However, very bad weather can occur, so please read our information about clothing.

Disqualification

Runners reaching Emstrur more than 6 hours after the start of the marathon will be disqualified from the race and will be driven to Hvolsvöllur and from there to Reykjavík. Those who were planning on staying in Thorsmörk after the race will be taken there.

Please not that when you register you release The Reykjavik Marathon from any rights and claims for any injuries or illnesses you may suffer during the race.

First Aid

Medical back-up will be provided at the main refreshment stations. There will be a doctor, nurse and other assistant personnel at the finish.

Awards

All runners who cross the goal will receive an award. The three fastest finishers of either sex will receive special awards as well as the first in all age groups. The three fastest teams will also receive special awards and we will also offer a number of other spot prizes.
